Piṇḍa Sveda (Bolus Fomentation)
Piṇḍa Sveda is a classical Ayurvedic svedana (sudation) therapy in which warm herbal boluses (piṇḍa) are rhythmically applied over the body or specific regions to induce therapeutic sweating, soften tissues, and mobilize doṣas lodged in the māṃsa (muscle) and asthi (joint) dhātus.
Core Elements
• Bolus (Piṇḍa): Prepared with cooked rice, herbs, leaves, or powders wrapped in cotton cloth.
• Medium: Boluses are heated in medicated oil, milk, decoction, or herbal liquid depending on doṣa and condition.
• Method: Repetitive tapping, pressing, and gentle rubbing in synchronized strokes.
• Duration: Typically 30–60 minutes, often following abhyanga.
Common Variants
• Śaṣṭika Śāli Piṇḍa Sveda: Rice cooked in milk + herbal decoction; nourishing and strengthening.
• Patra Piṇḍa Sveda: Leaf bolus (e.g., nirgundi, eranda); excellent for pain and stiffness.
• Cūrṇa Piṇḍa Sveda: Dry or lightly oiled herbal powders; useful in āma-dominant states.
Therapeutic Actions
• Relieves pain (śūla), stiffness (stambha), and heaviness (gaurava)
• Enhances circulation, tissue pliability, and joint mobility
• Pacifies Vāta (primary), and Kapha when āma is addressed
• Supports neuromuscular recovery and post-injury rehabilitation
Indications
• Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid patterns (post-āma clearance)
• Neuromuscular disorders, rigidity, spasm
• Chronic back/neck pain, sports injuries
• Vāta-Kapha conditions with cold, dryness, or stiffness
